I conducted a roundtable discussion with three very knowledgeable collectors to look at the status of the 1984-85 Star #101 Michael Jordan card. The question on the table was: “Is the 84-85 Star #101 card Michael Jordan’s true rookie card and why/why not? Why is it that the card is designated an XRC by most collectors?”
Recently I was able to pick up what I think is a gem of a Star Co produced team bagged set... for less than $20! This is the 1990-91 Silver Season Equal set - read on to learn more about this team bag and why I think it is somewhat of an unnappreciated gem.
Guest writer Lou Costabile takes a look at why there are so few well graded 1984-85 Michael Jordan Star cards. It might surprise you to know that the highest grade, at time of writing, of the 84-85 #101 Michael Jordan Star card is BGS9 - and that there are only 8 graded this high.
There is much incorrect information surrounding the rumoured unauthorized reprinting of some of the early Star Co sets in the 1990's. Most sources state that the 1984-85 Michael Jordan XRC was included and reprinted using the original printing plates. As you will see this is not true however many Star cards have been reprinted and counterfeited.
Jordan cards collector Roy from Kentucky has sent in a couple of scans of some very nice (and obviously very rare) Michael Jordan cards in his collection. We are looking for some help to identify these cards.
